Dr. Fenton Ferguson, on Friday, August 30, broke ground for the expansion of the St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital in St. Ann at a cost of $140 million.The project, which is being funded by the National Health Fund (NHF), will provide additional theatre facility and recovery area, and improve overall care to patients.Phase one will cost some $59 million and will entail construction of a 3,572- square foot building, which will house two additional theatre sites, staff lounge, and consultants’ offices, along with a six-bed recovery area.The scope of work includes construction of a thick concrete roof and traditional reinforced block walls with specialised walls and floor finishes, installation of central air conditioning units as well as relevant sanitary fixtures, and commissioning of medical gases, surgical lights, and a fire protection system.Phase two will run concurrently with phase one, and involves the acquisition of mainly surgical equipment and furniture.Dr. Ferguson said that the expansion is needed, as it will better enable the hospital to serve residents of the parish and adjoining areas. The institution caters to persons in St. Ann, while patients are referred from St. Mary, Portland, Trelawny, Clarendon, St. Catherine, and St. Andrew.“The St. Ann’s Bay Hospital is experiencing an increase in the number of surgeries from a little over 2, 700 in 2008, to more than 3,000 by 2011. The hospital serves a population of approximately 365,000. It was when I visited… in 2012 and saw the conditions in the accident and emergency department that I decided that we would begin work immediately to make improvements to the facility. I know the importance of having good service and facilities, and my commitment is to put the health sector and the people of Jamaica on the path to achieving our National Development Goals outlined in Vision 2030,” Dr. Ferguson stated.He said that the project should be completed by the end of this financial year, and urged the contractor to “ensure that we get value for money through the provision of the highest quality service that you can offer.
