JessnerA judge lauded for leading technology innovations in the courts has been elected the assistant presiding judge of Los Angeles County’s Superior Court system for the 2021-2022 term, it was announced Wednesday.Samantha P. Jessner — the supervising judge of the court’s civil division since January 2019 — worked to develop protocols to hear cases safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, including developing jury selection methods and juror questionnaires and implementing remote appearance technology, according to a statement released by the court.She had previously been the assistant supervising judge of the court’s civil division and the supervising judge of the Mental Health Courthouse, and led the court’s technology innovations for many years, including providing training to hundreds of judges.Jessner is a founding member of the Association of African American California Judicial Officers and a member of the National Association of Women Judges.Before she was appointed to the bench in 2007, she worked as an assistant U.S. attorney, an assistant inspector general for the Los Angeles Police Commission and as litigation counsel for the Boeing Co.Jessner said she is “honored and privileged to have the opportunity to lead the Los Angeles Superior Court through and beyond these challenging times,” and looks forward to working with the next presiding judge, Eric C.
